10 Best Multiplayer VC Games

August 7, 2007, by xKarma

If you're like me, you bought the Wii console because you enjoy playing video games with other people. The now infamous Wii Sports that comes packaged with a new Wii is a prime example of Wii's ability to offer a great multiplayer experience. But Wii's multiplayer strengths are not limited to the newest titles or even remotely new titles. The Virtual Console service grants Wii owners the ability to download a ton of retro games with new ones added every Monday and there are plenty among them that offer a good multiplayer experience. Without further ado, I present to you 10 of the best available multiplayer games amongst the many Virtual Console titles (in alphabetical order)

Bomberman '93

It's a Bomberman game and for most any gamer that should be explanation enough. Ten years after the original 1983 release of Bomberman, Bomberman '93 still utilizes the same formula as the original: run around trying to blow your friends up with bombs. Bomberman '93 supports up to 5 players and is highly recommended.

Dungeon Explorer

What's better than getting together with some buddies and hacking your way through hoards of monsters in a brutal dungeon? Okay so this might not be for everybody. Dungeon Explorer is a dungeon crawl with a cruel difficulty level that supports up to 5 players. If this is at all your cup of tea then Dungeon Explorer is a no-brainer.

F-Zero X

Very fun racer even by today's standards with plenty of tracks and even randomly generated ones. It is also the better of the two available F-Zero titles on the virtual consoles. As a matter of fact, it's the best racing game on VC period. If racing is your genre then get this game now.

Golden Axe

A beat 'em up of epic proportions. Set in a medieval/fantasy setting, Golden Axe puts you in control of a magical warrior that must kick a lot of ass. Depending on your taste, it is hard to recommend this game over Streets of Rage 2 but it certainly offers up good old-fashioned fun when played together with a buddy.

Gunstar Heroes

The best run-and-gun game on the Virtual Console so you better believe this one is fun to play with a friend. Offering up tons of boss battles, this game literally does not let up on the action.

Mario Kart 64

Not the best version of Mario Kart by a long shot but a Mario Kart nonetheless. This means you can expect fun races with up to 4-players as well as battle mode. If you're used to Double-Dash or Mario Kart DS then you'll probably have trouble with slide turns in this one so practice before battling your buddies.

R-Type III

Another shoot 'em up but in this case with ships. R-Type III is the better version of the available R-Type games and is arguably the best shoot 'em up available on the Virtual Console - and believe me there are plenty to choose from.

Street Fighter 2 Turbo: Hyper Fighting

This is hands down the best fighter available on the VC. Beware that there are two versions of Street Fighter to choose from because this one is that much better. Hell, it's one of the best 2D fighting games period. You better believe beating up on your buddy with fireballs is damn fun.

Streets of Rage 2

The best classic beat 'em up on VC. You and a friend will walk the streets beating people's asses with fists, pipes, swords, and whatever else. There are fun boss battles and a difficulty level that is just about right. This is one title you should definitely pick up.

Tecmo Bowl

This is no Madden football but is damn fun to play with a buddy. If you were not part of the generation that played this game originally, it's still worth playing. If you were part of the Tecmo Bowl generation then I'm sure you have fond memories of returning kick offs and successful hail-maries. What a great game.
